Reinhardstein Castle stands on a rocky outcrop in the Warche valley of Liège Province in eastern Belgium, built in 1354 for Wenceslaus of Luxembourg by his vassal Reinhard of Weismes. Now surrounded by forest, the stronghold passed through successive noble hands—the Nesselrode, Nassau, and Schwartzenberg families—before falling to the Counts of Metternich from 1550 to 1812. Following the French Revolution's confiscation and subsequent ownership transfers, the castle nearly fell to quarrying in the nineteenth century. Prussian authorities halted demolition efforts after 1815, initiating the first preservation campaigns. After the Treaty of Versailles returned the territory to Belgium in 1919, the castle remained vulnerable until Professor Jean Overloop acquired and thoroughly renovated it in 1969. Now a protected heritage property in Wallonia, Reinhardstein remains inhabited while welcoming tourists through its gates and along a scenic walking route.
