Wettin Castle stands near the town of Wettin on the Saale river in eastern Germany as the ancestral seat of the House of Wettin, a dynasty whose branches have ruled the United Kingdom and Belgium. Built around 900, the castle originated when Dedo I and Frederick, sons of Theodoric I, received lands in the county of Wettin following the conquest of Wendish territory in 982. Though legend attributes the family to one Wettekind, historical records remain uncertain; some sources credit a descendant named Thimo with founding the castle itself. Today the structure survives as a rebuilt ruin, incorporated into a building serving as a school and other public institutions, while other Wettin family castles from the fifteenth century and later remain standing at Meissen and along the Elbe.
