Dresden Castle, one of the oldest buildings in Dresden, served as the residence of the Saxon electors and kings from the House of Wettin for nearly four centuries, beginning in 1547, and also housed Polish royalty between 1697 and 1763. Constructed and refined by numerous architects including Giovanni Maria Nosseni, Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, and Wolf Caspar von Klengel, the palace evolved through successive stylistic phases—Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Renaissance—reflecting the changing tastes of its occupants. Today it functions as a major museum complex, preserving the Historic and New Green Vault alongside the Numismatic Cabinet, the Armory with its Turkish Chamber, and significant collections of prints, drawings, and photographs, making it a repository of Saxon cultural heritage and artistic treasures.
