Friedenstein Palace in Gotha, Thuringia, is an early Baroque residence begun in 1656 by Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha. Designed by architect Caspar Vogel, it ranks among Germany's largest and earliest Baroque palaces of its era. The castle served as the principal seat of the Dukes of Saxe-Gotha, and later as a residence for the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha—a dynasty linked to the British royal house through the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Today the palace complex operates as a museum complex and houses the Ekhof-Theater, one of Germany's oldest continuously operating theatres, which retains its original Baroque stage machinery for scenic changes.
