Schwerin Castle, situated on an island in Lake Schwerin in the German state capital, is a 19th-century palace built in the historicist style and ranked among Europe's most significant examples of Romantic historicism. Designed collaboratively by the eminent architects Gottfried Semper, Friedrich August Stüler, Georg Adolf Demmler, and Ernst Friedrich Zwirner between 1845 and 1857, the structure replaced an earlier castle that had served as the residence of Mecklenburg's dukes and grand dukes, though little of the pre-19th-century building survives. Today the palace serves multiple functions: parts house the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament, while other sections contain a museum, restaurant, and cultural venues including open-air theatre in the courtyard. Nicknamed the "Neuschwanstein of the North," the castle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024.
