Perched in the Harz mountains above the town of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, this château began as a Romanesque fortress built in the early 12th century (1110–1120) to serve as a imperial hunting lodge. Though repeatedly reconstructed over the centuries—enlarged in Gothic style during the 15th century with distinctive arched windows, then rebuilt as a Renaissance fortress in the 16th century—little of the medieval core survives. Architect Friedrich von Schmidt oversaw the castle's transformation into its present-day form, completed in the late 19th century and styled to evoke Schloss Neuschwanstein. A Renaissance spiral staircase tower remains among the few original features preserved through these extensive renovations.
