Blankenburg Castle, perched on the limestone peak of Blankenstein at 305 metres above sea level in the town of Blankenburg in Saxony-Anhalt's Harz district, originated in 1123 under the direction of architect Hermann Korb. This substantial fortress dominates the landscape, with the nearby Little Castle—adorned with Baroque gardens, a tea house, and museum—complementing the larger complex. The castle grounds encompass the town wall, a pheasant garden, formal castle park, and pond, together forming a remarkable ensemble of medieval and Baroque architecture set within carefully developed grounds.
