Falkenstein Castle, situated at 1,277 metres above sea level near Pfronten in the Bavarian Alps, is Germany's highest castle. Originally built in 1280, the structure now survives as a ruin designated as an architectural heritage monument in Bavaria. King Ludwig II of Bavaria acquired the site in 1883 with ambitious plans to construct a fairy tale castle, but these aspirations were abandoned following his death in 1886, leaving the medieval fortress in its present ruined state.
