Blankenhain Castle stands near Crimmitschau in Saxony's Zwickau district, a structure with roots reaching back to the 12th century but transformed repeatedly through the centuries. Originally documented as a Wasserburg in 1423, the castle suffered a catastrophic fire in 1661 that destroyed half its structure; reconstruction followed in 1699. Its distinctive Baroque character—marked by a mansard roof and domed towers—was established in 1765. After World War II, when Soviet authorities ordered its demolition, local intervention preserved the building from destruction. Since 1981, the castle and its surrounding 11-hectare grounds have functioned as an open-air museum dedicated to agricultural and rural life in central Germany between 1890 and 1990, encompassing some 60 traditional buildings.
