Oldenburg Castle in the German city of Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, evolved from a fortress founded around 1100 into a Renaissance Revival palace completed in 1607, becoming the ancestral seat of the House of Oldenburg. Originally a medieval stronghold, the present structure served as the official residence of the counts (1667–1785), dukes (1785–1815), and grand dukes (1815–1918) of Oldenburg. Today the palace functions as a cultural institution, housing significant portions of the State Museum for Art and Cultural History, including its collections of decorative arts, local history, and old master paintings. The castle's setting is anchored by the Schlossplatz to its west and north, with the Schlosshöfe shopping mall to the north and the Schlossgarten Oldenburg, the city's principal public park, extending to the southwest.
