Hoensbroek Castle, one of the largest castles in the Netherlands, stands in Heerlen in the province of Limburg. This imposing watercastle, known as "the most lordly stronghold between Rhine and Meuse," has roots reaching back to around 1225, when a motte-and-bailey occupied the marshy site. A fortified manor was constructed in 1250, followed by the castle's oldest surviving structure—a tall round tower—built around 1360 by Herman Hoen. Positioned strategically along trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen, and Cologne within the Duchy of Brabant, the castle underwent successive expansions that transformed it into a sprawling complex containing at least 67 halls, rooms, and living quarters. Today it operates as a museum and is designated a Rijksmonument.
