Perched 675 metres above the Tyrolean town of Schwaz, Burg Freundsberg stands as a castle founded in 1150 by the lords of Freundsberg, its original keep remaining intact to the present day. A chapel was added in 1177, and the fortification underwent significant rebuilding after 1467 when Archduke Sigismund of Austria acquired it and renamed it Sigismundruh. Between 1634 and 1637, the castle was retrofitted as a Schlosskirche (castle church). Following decades of private ownership and eventual acquisition by the municipality of Schwaz in the early nineteenth century, the castle underwent restoration beginning in 1966. Since 1948, it has functioned as a museum dedicated to documenting the history of Schwaz and the region's silver mining heritage.
