Built in 1705 in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Capitol served as the seat of colonial government, housing both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly—the Governor's Council and the House of Burgesses. Designed in the Colonial Revival style, the original structure stood until its destruction by fire in 1747; a second capitol building occupied the same site from 1753 until the capital's relocation to Richmond in 1780. The earlier capitol was reconstructed in the early 1930s as part of the Colonial Williamsburg restoration project, a reconstruction that has now outlasted both original buildings combined.
