Built in 1872, the Capt. Nathaniel Stone House—also known as the Ring House—stands at 268 Maine Street in Farmingdale, Maine, as the community's only significant example of Second Empire architecture. This Italianate-influenced structure exemplifies the ornamental residential style that flourished in mid-nineteenth-century America, blending the decorative detail of Italian villa design with the mansard roofs and formal elegance characteristic of the Second Empire period. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, securing its recognition as a rare architectural landmark within its modest Maine town.
