Castle Cornet is a fortified stronghold begun in 1206 on what was originally a tidal island off Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, constructed from structural wood and diorite. Built to defend both the island and its roadstead, the castle gained new strategic significance in 1859 when it became incorporated into one of the breakwaters of Saint Peter Port harbour. Now serving as a local authority museum, Castle Cornet represents a medieval fortification transformed by maritime engineering into a component of modern harbor infrastructure.
