Monmouth Castle, a fortress overlooking the River Monnow in the town of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, was founded around 1060 and served as an important border stronghold in south-east Wales. It gained historical prominence as the birthplace of Henry V of England. During the English Civil War, the castle sustained damage and changed hands repeatedly before being slighted to prevent future fortification. Following a partial collapse in 1647, the site was rebuilt as Great Castle House, which subsequently became the headquarters and regimental museum of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers. Now designated a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument, it remains a National Monument of Wales.
