Nunney Castle stands in the Somerset village of Nunney as a ruined medieval fortress built in the late 14th century by Sir John Delamare, who financed its construction through his military campaigns during the Hundred Years' War. The moated castle's distinctive architectural style—possibly inspired by French fortress design—has generated scholarly debate about its influences and precedents. Late 16th-century remodelling altered its original form before English Civil War damage further transformed the structure. Now maintained by English Heritage as a scheduled monument and tourist site, the castle has earned recognition from architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as "aesthetically the most impressive castle in Somerset."
