Northampton Castle, founded in 1084, was one of England's most significant Norman fortifications, strategically positioned outside the western gate of Northampton and protected by deep trenches on three sides and the River Nene on the fourth. The castle featured a substantial keep and extensive grounds, with earthen bulwarks surrounding its gates designed to support artillery. The arrival of a railway branch—now part of the West Coast Main Line—in the nineteenth century destroyed most of the structure; Northampton Castle railway station was built directly upon the site. Today only the Postern Gate survives, standing near Northampton Railway Station as a scheduled monument.
