Hedingham Castle in Castle Hedingham, Essex, stands as arguably England's best-preserved Norman keep. Built around 1140, the massive stone structure was erected as part of a larger fortification complex constructed circa 1100, though only the keep survives from the medieval period as a major building, having lost two of its original turrets over the centuries. Now a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument, the keep remains open to the public and stands as a remarkable example of Norman military architecture.
