Perched at approximately 1,460 metres in the Apennines near Calascio in Abruzzo's Province of L'Aquila, the Castle of Rocca Calascio is Italy's highest fortress. This Norman stone and masonry stronghold was built purely for military purposes—to garrison troops rather than accommodate nobility—overlooking the Plain of Navelli from the ancient Barony of Carapelle. Construction began in the tenth century as a single watchtower; in the thirteenth century, a walled courtyard with four cylindrical corner towers and a taller central tower was added. The fortress's distinctive design features larger stones in its lower half, apparently intended to make the base impervious to siege. Never tested in actual battle, the fortress was severely damaged by the devastating L'Aquila earthquake of November 1461, estimated at magnitude 7–8. While the town below was rebuilt, the fortress was abandoned and remains in ruins within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
