The Sforza Castle is a medieval fortification in Milan, northern Italy, built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, atop the ruins of a 14th-century castle. Designed by the Renaissance architect Filarete, the structure was substantially renovated and enlarged during the 16th and 17th centuries, eventually becoming one of Europe's largest citadels. Following extensive reconstruction by Luca Beltrami between 1891 and 1905, it was transformed into a cultural institution and now houses several of Milan's major museums and art collections. Designated as an Italian national heritage site, the castle represents a crucial chapter in both Milanese military architecture and the city's cultural preservation.
