The Royal Palace of Milan, a neoclassical palazzo designed by Giuseppe Piermarini, stands adjacent to the Duomo in Milan's Piazza del Duomo, opposite the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Originally serving as the seat of government for centuries, the 7,000-square-meter palace now functions as a cultural centre hosting international art exhibitions in cooperation with major museums worldwide, displaying over 1,500 masterpieces annually. The building's façade creates a recessed courtyard known as the Piazzetta Reale within the piazza. Originally planned with two courtyards, these were dismantled to accommodate the Duomo's expansion. The palazzo suffered severe damage during World War II air raids, particularly affecting the celebrated Hall of Caryatids on its main floor, and remained abandoned for over two years afterward, resulting in the loss of many neoclassical interior elements. Today it stands as a designated Italian national heritage site.
