The Center Theater in Hartsville, South Carolina, an Art Deco structure located at 212 North Fifth Street, was erected in 1936 with funding from the Works Progress Administration under Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. Originally designed as a motion picture house with 867 seats—nearly 200 in the balcony—the building was constructed as part of a multi-building block project and was historically known as "Building A" or the "Community Center Theater." The facility was later adapted to accommodate live performance arts and has hosted notable country music artists including Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash.
