Chesterfield House was a grand London townhouse built between 1747 and 1752 for Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, the statesman and man of letters. Designed by Isaac Ware, the house displayed a striking contrast between its restrained Palladian exterior and ornate Baroque interior. Located in Mayfair on the north side of Curzon Street, it was considered by French travel writer Pierre-Jean Grosley to rival the finest Parisian hôtels particuliers of the nobility. The house was demolished in 1937, replaced by a modern flat development that bears its name.
