Built in 1898 for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, this single-story brick depot in Wilton, Iowa exemplifies Romanesque Revival architecture. The structure replaced earlier wooden facilities at the site, which had served the community since the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad first established a rail line in 1855. The depot's construction reflected the railroad's growing operations and the town's expanding connection to regional rail networks—by 1911, six passenger trains stopped in Wilton daily, and by 1922 same-day service to Chicago commenced. Passenger service declined throughout the twentieth century, ceasing entirely in 1954, followed by part-time freight operations until the building's closure in 1974. The Wilton Historical Society subsequently restored the abandoned structure, which was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and later designated a contributing property in the Wilton Commercial Historic District in 2016.
