Built directly into the landscape of Naoshima in Japan's Kagawa Prefecture, the Chichu Art Museum opened in 2004 as the work of renowned architect Tadao Ando. Its name—literally meaning "art museum in the earth"—reflects its striking integration into the island's southern terrain, where the structure is partially submerged rather than conventionally above-ground. This approach to embedding the museum within the natural geography exemplifies Ando's characteristic sensitivity to site and materiality.
