Chorin Abbey, a Cistercian monastery near the village of Chorin in Brandenburg, Germany, was founded by the Ascanian margraves in 1258 and originally exerted considerable influence across the northern reaches of their territory, bordering Slavic lands. Built in brick, the abbey exemplifies the Brick Gothic architectural style characteristic of the region. After secularization in 1542, the structure fell into ruin until the early nineteenth century, when Karl Friedrich Schinkel oversaw its restoration and partial reconstruction. Today the abbey stands as an archetypal example of Brick Gothic architecture and is designated a heritage monument, part of the Deutsch-Polnisches Klosternetzwerk (German-Polish Monastery Network). The site gained additional cultural significance when scenes from the 1912 film Das Mirakel were shot there.
