Christ Church in Wanstead, east London, is a Church of England chapel of ease built to serve the expanding population of the Snaresbrook area during the railway boom of the mid-nineteenth century. Designed by the renowned George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1861, the building exemplifies the Gothic Revival at its height, employing the geometric style of the late thirteenth century. The foundation stone was laid in May 1860 by Joseph Wigram, Bishop of Rochester, and the church was consecrated the following July by Archibald Tait, Bishop of London. The structure underwent several phases of enlargement: an additional bay and south aisle were added to the nave in 1867, a tower and spire followed in 1869, and vestries were completed in 1889. Now Grade II* listed, it remains a significant example of Scott's ecclesiastical work and shares its parish with the nearby St Mary the Virgin.
