Opened in 1972 on the banks of the Avon River in central Christchurch, New Zealand, the Town Hall (formally the Christchurch Town Hall of the Performing Arts since 2007) stands as the city's premier performing arts centre. Designed by architects Maurice Mahoney and Miles Warren of Warren and Mahoney, the structure exemplifies brutalist architecture. Positioned opposite Victoria Square, the building sustained severe damage during the February 2011 earthquake and remained closed until its reopening in 2019 following a comprehensive rebuild approved by council in 2012. In 2020, it was registered as a Category I heritage building by Heritage New Zealand.
