The Civic Theatre in Auckland, New Zealand, is a large Moorish Revival performing-arts venue and cinema designed by architect William T. Leighton and opened on 20 December 1929. Seating 2,378 people, it exemplifies the atmospheric theatre style, in which sophisticated lighting and interior design create the illusion of an open night sky complete with twinkling stars, immersing audiences in the impression of an outdoor auditorium. The building underwent major conservation work in the late 1990s and reopened on 20 December 1999, marking its 70th anniversary. Now managed by Auckland Live, it serves as a heritage venue for performing arts, live music, and cinema, and holds Category 1 historic place status with Heritage New Zealand.
