The Church of Saint Mary's is a striking 1909 Beaux-Arts Catholic church located in New Trier, Minnesota, designed by St. Paul architect George J. Ries. Built of red brick and perched prominently on a hilltop overlooking the town, the structure is visible for miles across the landscape. The church serves as a focal point for a community settled by German immigrants from Trier beginning in 1854, who initially constructed a log church in 1857 and later a stone chapel in 1864 before commissioning this larger replacement. The building incorporates architectural memory: the cornerstone from the 1864 church was preserved in the vestibule, and a five-foot statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, crafted in 1862, sits in a shrine above the main entrance. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the church exemplifies the enduring religious and cultural heritage of the German-American community that dominated southeastern Dakota County.
