Perched in the Somerset village of Clapton in Gordano, the Church of St Michael is a Grade I listed building of significant architectural merit dating primarily to the 13th century, though its oldest visible element—a 12th-century tympanum—survives from the Norman period. The church was formally established by 1226, when an agreement between William de Clopton and Richard of Keynsham Abbey recorded its existence. Now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust since 1995, the building remains architecturally rich: its interior preserves a 13th-century oak screen originally from the adjacent Court House, a 14th-century font, late 17th-century monuments, and period benches and reredos. Though no longer in regular use, occasional services continue to be held throughout the year.
