Built in 1684 at the Palace of Versailles by order of Louis XIV, the Couvent des Récollets was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in the classical architectural style as a residence for the Recollects, a sixteenth-century Franciscan reform movement that had spread across France, Germany, and Holland. Following the suppression of the order during the French Revolution, the building was repurposed as a prison and subsequently used by the French army in the nineteenth century. Now occupied by the French Ministry of Defense and classified as a historical monument, the convent remains largely closed to the public except during special events such as the annual Mois Molière theater festival.
