The Palace of Versailles, located in the Yvelines department southwest of Paris, is a masterpiece of French Baroque architecture begun in 1661 under the direction of architects including Louis Le Vau, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, Ange-Jacques Gabriel, François d'Orbay, and Robert de Cotte, with André Le Nôtre and Charles Le Brun contributing to its design and decoration. Conceived by Louis XIV to glorify the French monarchy, it served as the principal residence of the French kings Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI, with the royal court and government residing there permanently from 1682 until the Revolution in 1789. The vast and complex ensemble encompasses approximately 63,154 square metres and contains roughly 2,300 rooms arranged to maintain architectural harmony across multiple courtyards and buildings. Its 815-hectare park features 93 hectares of formal gardens alongside the Petit and Grand Trianons, the Hameau de la Reine, canals, and other ornamental structures. Recognized as a World Heritage Site and classified historical monument, the palace exerted profound influence on European architecture and decorative arts throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and remains one of Europe's most visited sites.
