The Dennis L. Edwards Tunnel carries U.S. Route 26 (the Sunset Highway) through the Northern Oregon Coast Range in northwestern Oregon, approximately 28 miles west of Portland near the unincorporated community of Manning. Completed in 1940 and designed in the National Park Service rustic style, the tunnel spans 772 feet. Originally called the Sunset Tunnel, it was renamed in 2002 to honor Dennis L. Edwards, an Oregon Department of Transportation worker killed in a partial tunnel collapse on January 28, 1999, while inspecting damage from heavy rains. The tunnel was closed for five weeks of repairs following the incident.
