Situated in Colorado National Monument, the Devils Kitchen Picnic Shelter exemplifies National Park Service Rustic design, built in 1941 by workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps and Public Works Administration. Designed by Harvey H. Cornell, Jerome C. Miller, and Kenneth M. Saunders of the NPS Branch of Plans and Design, the shelter features three substantial sandstone fireplaces alongside toilets and service facilities—an unusually large and functionally diverse structure for its type. Much of its stone came from nearby Rim Rock Drive construction, while local skilled craftsmen, particularly stonemasons of Italian heritage, carried out the detailed stonework. The facility was constructed by men from CCC camp NM-2-C and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
