Standing at the western end of Madrid's Gran Vía, the Edificio España is a 117-meter skyscraper designed by Julián Otamendi Machimbarrena and completed in 1953. Originally conceived as a mixed-use complex housing a hotel, offices, apartments, and shops, the building combines Neo-Herrerian and Neo-Baroque exterior features with Art Deco interior decoration. Upon completion, it held the distinction of being Spain's tallest building until the nearby Torre de Madrid—also designed by Otamendi—surpassed it. The structure's 26 above-ground floors occupy a prominent position at Plaza de España. In 2017, the hotel chain RIU Hotels & Resorts acquired and refurbished the property, reopening it in August 2019 as the four-star Hotel Riu Plaza España.
