La Unión y el Fénix Español building in Madrid is a twelve-story Art Deco skyscraper completed in 1931 on the corner of Alcalá and Virgen de los Peligros streets. Designed by architect Modesto López Otero with Miguel de los Santos, it was originally built as headquarters for the insurance company of the same name and stands as one of Madrid's earliest skyscrapers. Rising 53 meters, the building was conceived to integrate harmoniously with the adjacent church of Las Calatravas, forming a unified urban entity. López Otero's design marks an evolution from his earlier regionalist eclecticism toward a more mature style informed by travels to the United States and Vienna. The building is crowned with a sculpture attributed to "sculptor Camps," whose precise identity remains uncertain. Since 2006, it has housed the Petit Palace Alcalá Torre hotel.
