Edificio La Nacional is an Art Deco office building that stands 56 meters tall on Avenida Juárez in Mexico City's Historical Centre, directly across from Palacio de Bellas Artes. Designed by Manuel Ortiz Monasterio, former director of the Escuela Nacional de Arquitectura, and constructed between 1929 and 1932, it was the first building over ten stories in Mexico and the country's tallest until Edificio Corcuera was completed in 1937. Originally housing the National Insurance Company (La Compañía Nacional de Seguros), the thirteen-story structure comprises 15,000 square meters and features a steel frame engineered to withstand the earthquakes common to the region. Served by five elevators, the building survived the major seismic events of 1957 and 1985, though it sustained minor damage from the 2012 Oaxaca-Guerrero earthquake. An adjacent annex, "La Nacional II," built in 1949, includes a Sears store and a café on the eighth floor with views toward Palacio de Bellas Artes and Alameda Park.
