The Alas Building is a 141-metre, 41-storey Rationalist skyscraper in Buenos Aires's San Nicolás neighbourhood, completed in 1957. Originally commissioned by President Juan Perón in 1950 for the Association of Unionized Latin American Workers, it was designed to include a subterranean bunker for emergency refuge during war or coup. Following the military coup of 1955, the building was transferred to the Argentine Air Force and renamed Alas ("wings"). The bunker subsequently became home to Argentine Public Television studios until their relocation in 1978. For four decades, from 1955 to 1995, Alas dominated Buenos Aires's skyline as its tallest building, only to be surpassed by the Le Parc tower. Today the underground levels serve practical functions including parking, a gym, and building amenities.
