Los Angeles City Hall, completed in 1928, stands at 138 meters in downtown Los Angeles's Civic Center district and serves as the seat of the city's government, housing the mayor's office and the Los Angeles City Council's chambers. Designed by architect John C. Austin in the Art Deco style, the building dominated the city's skyline as its tallest structure from 1928 until 1966 and retains the distinction of being the world's tallest base-isolated structure—an engineering feat that allows it to move independently of ground motion during earthquakes.
