San Francisco City Hall, the seat of government for the City and County of San Francisco, reopened in 1915 as a Beaux-Arts monument to the City Beautiful movement. Designed by Arthur Brown, Jr. of the firm Bakewell & Brown, the building stands in the city's Civic Center and features a dome that rises 42 feet higher than that of the United States Capitol—a testament to Brown's meticulous attention to architectural grandeur and detail, extending even to the selection of doorknobs and signage typefaces. The present structure replaced an earlier City Hall destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, which had stood two blocks away.
