Perched on the Plateau d'Assy in Passy, Haute-Savoie, with views toward Mont Blanc, this Roman Catholic church was designed by Savoyard architect Maurice Novarina and built between 1937 and 1946 at the initiative of canon Jean Devémy. A landmark in modern sacred art, it is celebrated for its decoration by leading twentieth-century artists whose contributions proved so controversial that the church's 1950 consecration provoked considerable consternation among French clergy accustomed to classical ecclesiastical architecture. The building was classified as a French historical monument in 2004.
