Eugene Masonic Cemetery is Oregon's oldest chartered cemetery, established in 1859 when the Freemasons purchased ten acres on a knoll near Eugene to serve as the city's public burial ground. Laid out with its main entrance at the intersection of University Street and 25th Avenue, the cemetery reflects ancient Egyptian architectural styling. Originally a fraternal endeavor to provide burial space for all prominent citizens, ownership transferred in 1994 to the non-profit Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association, though the name retains its historic Masonic reference. The cemetery, together with its Hope Abbey Mausoleum, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, recognizing it as one of Lane County's oldest continuously operating private entities.
