Exeter College is the fourth-oldest constituent college of the University of Oxford, founded in 1314 by Bishop Walter Stapledon and his brother Sir Richard Stapledon, two Devon brothers who established the institution to educate clergy. Located on Turl Street since 1315, the college was initially popular among sons of the Devon gentry but has since attracted a diverse array of distinguished alumni, including William Morris, J. R. R. Tolkien, Richard Burton, Roger Bannister, Alan Bennett, and Philip Pullman. The college's buildings, notably designed by architect George Gilbert Scott, are Grade I listed structures that reflect the institution's long and prominent history within Oxford's academic community.
