The Fagus Factory in Alfeld an der Leine, Lower Saxony, is a shoe last manufacturing plant designed by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer and built between 1911 and 1913, with interior work and additions completed by 1925. Commissioned by owner Carl Benscheidt to embody a radical architectural break from the company's past, the factory stands as a seminal work of early modern design. Its innovative approach to industrial architecture—marked by a bold, functionalist aesthetic—profoundly influenced the development of modernism in the twentieth century. Recognized for its outstanding architectural significance, the Fagus Factory was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 and remains a cultural heritage monument in Lower Saxony.
