Bauhaus Dessau is a building complex in Dessau-Roßlau, Germany, designed by Walter Gropius and constructed between 1925 and 1926 to house the Bauhaus School of Art, Design and Architecture. The structure, together with the nearby Masters' Houses, became an icon of modernism and is widely regarded as the pinnacle of pre-war modern design in Europe. It arose from the Weimar school's relocation and local efforts to reconcile the city's industrial character with cultural ambition. Severely damaged during the war and structurally altered, the building underwent major reconstruction from 1965 onwards in keeping with the original design, with further restoration and modernization in 1976 and comprehensive restoration following historical preservation principles between 1996 and 2006. Since 1996, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bauhaus and its Sites in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau.
