The Farmers' and Exchange Bank in Charleston, South Carolina, completed in 1853–54, stands as a rare and architecturally distinctive example of Moorish Revival design in the United States. Its striking red sandstone facade is adorned with muqarnas—the intricate honeycomb vaulting characteristic of Persian and North African architecture—and large arched windows that announce its exotic stylistic ambitions. This bold departure from contemporary American banking architecture earned the building recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1973 and a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
