The Florida Gymnasium, a Collegiate Gothic structure designed by architect Rudolph Weaver, opened in 1949 on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville as a 7,000-seat multi-purpose arena. Known colloquially as "Alligator Alley" during its three decades as the home court of the Florida Gators men's basketball team, the building served the university's indoor sports programs until the Stephen C. O'Connell Center opened in 1980. Subsequently repurposed through a series of renovations and rebuilding projects, the gymnasium was converted by the mid-1990s into classrooms, laboratories, and offices for the College of Health and Human Performance, though its original basketball court remains in use for small assemblies and academic activities.
