In the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district of Berlin, the Forschungseinrichtung für experimentelle Medizin—colloquially known as the "Mouse Bunker" (Mäusebunker)—stands as a striking example of brutalist architecture completed in 1981. Designed by architect Gerd Hänska, this research facility originally served as the Central Animal Laboratories of the Free University of Berlin until 2003. Its bold, fortress-like forms and massive concrete construction exemplify the brutalist style while reflecting its utilitarian purpose as a laboratory building. Today recognized as an architectural heritage monument, the structure remains a distinctive landmark of Berlin's postwar scientific infrastructure.
